June 30:
Andy, who is a civil engineer, was very excited as we crossed the Rio-Antirrio Suspension Bridge from mainland Greece to the Peloponnese Peninsula. It is an engineering achievement due to its length and the seismic activity in the area. It opened the day before the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics. |
We take a cog train up the mountain and then onto lunch of freshly caught trout. Only catch is that half way up the mountain, our train dies! Apostolous remains calm and keeps us all entertained while we wait for another train. At one point he starts talking about how there shouldn't be any snakes in the area, and as the words are leaving his mouth, we see a snake!!!! Our lunch is delayed a few hours, but was worth the wait. We are served family style and eat way too much. The fried cheese here is heavenly.
We are spending 1 night in the small hillside town of Lagkadia. The hotel is very modern, but the town is quaint and has sweeping views of the valley. Our group dinner is baked lamb, but first we are treated to a performance of traditional music and dancing. Our dancers are part of a local group that works to keep their traditions alive. Opa!
