July 7:
This morning we head to Epidavros. The highlight of this site is an ancient Greek theater. It is very well preserved and is still used to host productions. The theater was designed to have excellent acoustics so you can hear the actors from the cheap seats. We take a 20 minute boat ride to the island of Hydra. Hydra is very lively when we arrive; bustling with people, boats and donkeys. There are no cars on the island, so you are walking or hiring a donkey. Our hotel is about an 8 minute walk from the harbor and has a beautiful garden out front. Andy and I grab lunch at restaurant on the harbor and enjoy people (and donkey) watching along with a daiquiri and an Aperol Spritz. |
July 8:
Today is a free day, and we have no scheduled activities. Apostolous has offered to take any interested persons to the Lazaros Koundoriotis Historical Mansion. The home itself is a well persevered example of an 18th century mansion house and they are also displaying art by Robert McCabe and Constantinos Byzantios. At 1pm we meet the Coopers and take a water taxi to what we later dub "Bougie Beach". The beach location is perfect; there is a high end restaurant that has beach chairs and umbrellas to rent. We camp out for several hours and alternate between relaxing and swimming. The umbrella stand has a button to summon a waiter so we sit back and enjoy sliders and cocktails. |
